How a Model-First Process Works

Process is messy drawing from Show Your Work!
by Austin Kleon

Sometimes things are so clear in your head or you've been working with the same team for so long that you forget that others can't see what's going on inside your brain or the team huddle.

And so it is with our work of creating websites and digital products by starting with a content model. It's time to share the process and improve it. That means some visualization.

To that end, we've created a Miro Board that explains the model-first process. Please take a look at it. We want to hear from everyone, especially people who

  • manage websites, projects, products, or content
  • design experiences or interfaces
  • write code
  • build content management systems

Take what you need.

Leave feedback in the comments below on what could be improved, added, or removed.

Share with us what's worked for you and your team or clients.

If you want to explore more deeply how planning through modeling can influence your entire design process, I invite you to read Designing Connected Content: Plan and Model Digital Products for Today and Tomorrow.

Together we can build the future of design that is deliberate, collaborative, and forward-looking.

Structure...provides a plan for your content work.
